This linkage update is for the pre-2006 Subaru 5MT that DO NOT have the external return spring. Subaru stopped using the external return spring sometime in 1998. If you are unsure please look at your linkage under the car to check.

What it does: Eliminates much of the side to side slop that develops in the lever due to the stock bushings wearing out.

Why a whole linkage when the other styles we offer are just bushings: The STi, the 05+ Legacy 5MT, and ALL the 06+ Subaru 5MTs have a linkage that you can completely take apart and replace the bushings. The cars prior to this in that 1998 to 2005 timeframe have a linkage that is riveted together and cannot be serviced or upgraded.

What about the bushings - won't they just fail again: No. As part of the Updated linkage you get TiC linkage bushings. They are much stiffer and more wear resistant that the stock pieces.

Why you want it: Simple. Better definition of each gear so you're no longer rowing in pudding.

    Fairly easy to install with just a punch, a hammer and a couple of spanners. Makes the shifting so much cleaner and sharper. Definitely worth it. Makes overall driving experience so much more enjoyable.

    I didn't even jack the gearbox to knock out rawl pin that holds old pivot to gearbox. Just put in fifth gear and knock out with a punch and hammer. Then replaced pin with a bolt and nylock nut. Too easy and awesome result when installed with front and rear shifter bushes and short shifter. Watch youtube vids, do it all at once and save the headaches, and enjoy sweet shifts.

    Worked great on my 1997 gc8 wrx. Cut the external return spring holder side of the original piece off and bolted it to the upgraded piece. Fixed all slop of the original. And together with the bushings is now tighter than my 2016 sti shifter! The irony.

    Fixed the slop in the shift perfectly. Nice solid shift now. Not easy to get the old one out there is a double roll pin (small one inside big one) Easiest way is to prop the gearbox with a trolley jack & remove the gearbox to get a straight shot to knock the pin out.

    installation was pretty simple to figure out. however- it really should come with instructions. i installed it and the shifting is waaaaaaay too stiff. no i beleive this is attributed to me overtighting the pivot bolt thats supplied.

    if it had instructions saying not to over tighten, i wouldnt have to get back under the car again!


    seriously tho, this tightened up my sloppy box no end....

    i know a few people who could do with a mod like this.......
